Beep!!

17 09 2008

Beep! Beep! Okay, that’s what we’ve been hearing all night. Yaaaawwwwn. We have 11, yes 11 fire alarms. 10 of them are beeping. It’s like 10 little birds have snuck in the house. We changed all the batteries, took all the batteries out, turned off the power (they were still going off), reset them all and still, Beep! I’m waiting now until it’s late enough in the morning to call an electrician. Don’t know what else to do. I hope someone can come out today, otherwise I may have to get the hammer out. My husband says I’m being impatient, yeah, as he’s walking out the door to sit in his quiet, beep free office:-)

Okay, I don’t want to bore you any longer with my beeping story. I want to talk about husbands!!!

Last night, a friend turned the big 4-0! Her very sweet husband planned a surprise party. While a neighbor took her and the kids to dinner, he cleaned the entire house and made the best fondue ever with strawberries, angel food cake and bananas! An entire house full of people showed up and the surprise was a success. We couldn’t believe it because she’s not one to pull the wool over her eyes. The first thing she said, was “OMG, the house was a mess when I left!” ha! I assured her that it was spic and span when I got there. Her husband spent the night stirring the fondue and taking photos of everyone. Then to top it all off, later he pulled a giant chocolate cake out of the fridge! He even put candles on it! I was shocked at his attention to detail:-) It was a great night and he was beaming because he’d pulled it off. The men in the house were not too thrilled to have to live up to his greatness… ha! Happy Birthday Kim! You’re one lucky gal.

So ladies, I want to hear your stories about something great your husband has done for you. Can you top this?

Because of all the beeping, all I can think of right now is that my husband tried his very best to turn those alarms off last night, he was up way past his bedtime.

**************

Alright… fast forward several hours after the electrician fixed the alarms. Yeah!!! Now I can think! I haven’t had a party planned for me, but my hubby does lots of little things everyday. Besides keeping our yard looking beautiful, no joke ladies, this is what he does each Saturday:

  1. takes out all trash
  2. does everyone’s laundry
  3. washes dishes and puts away clean ones from the dishwasher
  4. fixes anything that needs fixing
  5. plays with the kids so I can run errands
I’d say acts of service is definitely his love language! I also get chocolate and flowers on Valentine’s Day too:-)

You are right, that beeping is the THE MOST ANNOYING sound I have ever heard. It happened at my house last spring. Like you, I tried everything including turning off the power and they still beeped! I called a “handyman” (can’t remember which one but there are lots in this area) who had a big tall ladder and he took care of all of them. I have never been so thankful for silence in my house. Good luck! I hope you can get someone to come to your house soon. KV

Oh my, that beeping would seriously cause me to stick a ice picks in my ears. Good luck with that!

Thank you for stopping by my blog and commenting! It’s you and me against a Units comeback. Ugh. 🙂

I love happy hubby stories. Don’t we bash them enough? Let’s give them their due! Mine treated me like a queen during my pregnancies–doing all the chores around the house, bringing me cereal in bed every morning so I wouldn’t barf, bathing the kids.

I have two things my husband did for me (well there’s been more in 18 1/2 years, but that would be too long of a comment. It’s already going to be long enough.)

First was a Birthday Gift Certificate.
This document entitles you to the following:
Up to $100 fabric at the store of your choice. (My hobby is quilting by the way)
A Saturday of your choice to go get said fabric without a person less than half your age tagging along (limit 9 am to 5 pm)
Permission to play the car stereo loudly with your favorite music while driving on said Saturday to pick up your fabric.
Lunch on said Saturday without a person less than half your age tagging along.
A (more of less) clean house when you get back.
The remainder of said Saturday to quilt (limit 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm)

And then there was the “Mother’s Day Not Card”. It was a home made card that had the following: This card is good for one day to not be a mom. You may either use it to go away for 24 hours or for Amy & Daddy to go away for 24 hours (or so). During this time, you may have fun. You may spend money, but you may not break the bank. You can go anywhere you like as long as you can get back in 24 hours (or so). You could even quilt if you want. Don’t worry, we’ll manage. Don’t worry, be happy.
In small print was the terms and restrictions – If you want to do this on a weekday, you must notify daddy at least a week in advance. You must not call or otherwise be concerned about us. (although you might want to call at bedtime…Amy’s that is, not daddy’s)

I think these had to be two of the best gifts I ever got. And I still have the cards to this day. Even though I’ve already redeemed them.

We drove over 6 hours one time to spend the weekend with friends at their absolutely beautiful, brand-new home. At the time we had a 2 year-old little boy and a 6 month old little girl. Our girl had colic and had never slept for more than 3 hours at a time (and she only slept that long if we had a vacuum cleaner running the entire time.) To say I was sleep deprived would be a slight under-exaggeration. Anyway, on the first night of our visit after we all had fallen asleep, ALL of the fire alarms in their home started beeping…and they kept beeping the entire night. I so completely feel your pain right now! I would be going out of my mind insane. I hope that the electrician is able to figure out the problem. If not, the hammer sounds like a good option!

For the husband story…my husband is wonderful is so many ways, but planning surprise parties is NOT one of those ways. The one time he tried to surprise me was on my 30th birthday. He called and invited numerous family members over that night for cake…but he didn’t inform me that he had invited anyone over and he did not clean the house. I was wallowing in misery over turning 30 and had decided to let the house go for the day…as in, it could have been declared as a disaster zone. When he came to his senses that afternoon and called to tell me that 30 people were coming over for cake that night, would I be able to clean up the house a little bit before they got there? I almost killed him. The worst birthday of my life.

This year (for my 35th birthday and Mother’s Day gift combined) he skipped the surprise party and bought me a laptop computer and Photoshop CS3 instead. Best birthday of my life! 🙂 See, he really is wonderful!

Have a great day Amy (beep, beep!)

Wow–you’re more hearty than I am. I would have had to leave after about 20 beeps.

My husband is always VERY thoughtful about the gifts that he gives. I have always loved writing, and years before I had a blog, he was trying to encourage me in that. So for Christmas I got a beautiful leather journal with a bunch of refills, some very nice pens, and a book that gives a person writing fodder for each day.

I love cookies. One Valentine’s Day I came home to a plate of cookies that said “I Love You” in white chocolate chips. The plate was surrounded by burning candles. And he had made the cookies himself!

I could go on and on, but he is just very thoughtful like that. Great guy.

I’m so glad to hear the beeping finally stopped! That would’ve sent me over the edge.

I can’t believe the lengths that this man went to surprise his wife on her birthday. That’s really amazing. I can’t imagine my husband ever pulling something like that off, mostly because I’m “Julie Cruise Director” around here and he would have no idea how to go about planning a party.

He’s always going out of his way for me, though. He’s big on small everyday gestures, I guess you could say. Like when I couldn’t figure out Paintshop Pro to make a blog button yesterday, he stayed home from work for two hours to create one for me. Gotta love a man who takes your blog seriously. -Julia 🙂

It makes me crazy when the smoke alarms beep! Glad yours got fixed!

That sounds like a great party. Lucky girl! Your hubby sounds like a keeper too! My hubby does lots of things to help, but I’d say the biggest thing is that he does almost all the cooking and the grocery shopping. Since I don’t like to cook, it makes me very happy that he does! He’s also is so great about always buying me the best presents for Christmas or birthdays. He picks out the perfect things for me.

Congratulations on your award!
